There are a few important things to understand about the geography of the region where the novel takes place. Europe is tiny in comparison to the US, therefore traveling distance in our country would be a much bigger issue, but not for the Scarlet Pimpernel! First, size is a huge help to him. The distance from Paris to Dover and safety is relatively small. Second, the small amount of sea separating England and France is minuscule. This makes the escapees safe virtually the minute they sail out of the port at Calais. The setting is ideal for daring escapes!
